Market Lists
Craigslist is a page of free online classified ads where you can find or sell almost anything. Go to the main page, click the name of your city (in the bar on the right), and then look under both "jobs" and "gigs" to find work for writers. Many freelancers swear by this site.
John Labovitz's E-Zine-List We recommend browsing by keywords - the site has a few bugs, but it also has a large number of listings.
The Market List (sci-fi/fantasy/horror) After extended hiatus, the website is undergoing a thorough update - it's well organized and easy to navigate. Articles, interviews, and reviews as well.
Paula Fleming's Market List is a disorganized and largely personal site, but its market list focuses exclusively on paying markets for genre fiction.
PoeWar is an online magazine for working writers (or writers who want to find work). Most of its articles and job listings target poets and authors of nonfiction, but some tenets of writing are universal. As a bonus, the "Money Roll" section provides information on how to avoid scams and general council on money management - useful since many creative writers go deeply into debt. The rest of the site is just as informative - and their articles section is stellar.
Ralan's Webstravaganza Thorough listings, including contests and notification of now-dead markets.
The Rose and Thorn E-zine Though its own market list is more of a discussion board than a list, it sometimes recommends contests, and lists others' market lists.
Spicy Green Iguana - The Speculative Fiction Magazine Resource Site Wonderfully organized and endlessly helpful. Reviews, resources, publishers, and a very up-to-date market list.
Writer's Crossing Although we're including their market listings here, it's a good site in general. Focuses in particular on the publication aspect of writing.
The Write Market is an exceptionally well organized database of markets and publishers. It is currently a little short on listings, but what listings there are can be searched by category - and within the category may be sorted alphabetically, by date, or by rating.
